Caffè Svizzero
Via Dolzino 73
23022 Chiavenna SO

The ancient Caffè Svizzero, founded in 1867, was managed for over a century by the Persenico family.
Since 1933 it has become a renowned pastry bar with an adjoining laboratory and, thanks to the charisma of Erus, a place of social, political and cultural aggregation, where the idea to create the traditional Sagra dei Crotti was born.
In addition to the charismatic presence of Erus, it is right to remember Sciora Oliva, who, with her kindness and dedication, contributed in keeping the Caffè Svizzero a place of meetings, kindness and smiles until 1985.
Since 2019, Cinzia and Lucian have continued the tradition of hospitality with a successful management keeping up with the times.

Typical local biscuits

Simple, crumbly biscuits typical of Valchiavenna, made with flour, sugar and butter, are irresistible thanks to their texture and rich, delicate flavour.

Taste here:

Walk along the Mera promenade

Starting from the bridge of St John of Nepomuk, in the heart of the old town, you walk along the promenade with a breathtaking view of the city’s ancient noble palaces.
Ideal for a romantic walk, this itinerary evokes special atmospheres, especially at sunset, when the light on the city seems to tell ancient stories.

La curt di asen

It evokes a medieval atmosphere, despite the fact that most of the historic centre dates back to the 1500s, after a fire destroyed the city in 1486. The area retains the medieval architectural features it may have had if it had survived the fire. The name of the court derives from the fact that draught animals, such as horses and mules or donkeys (in fact, asen) were left there. The main building is characterised by a pair of rococo columns with different shapes and a wooden balcony, above which is a smaller balcony. The columns are decorated with engravings, including the date 1748, evidence of the long history of the place. It represents a precious legacy of Chiavenna’s medieval past and architectural tradition.

In case of bad weather

Portico of the town hall.
